The Sun
- The Sun is a huge ball of hot, fiery gases.
- The Sun gives light to the entire Solar System.
- Without the Sun, Earth would be a dark planet.
Mercury
- Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun.
- Mercury is small and it has a rocky surface.
- Mercury has 176 days of light and 176 days of darkness.
- Mercury has no air or water and no rings or moons.
- The temperature on Mercury ranges from -180 F to 420 F.
- Mercury has many craters.
Mars
- Mars is the 4th planet from the sun.
- Mars takes 686.98 days to orbit around the Sun.
- Scientists think that there may be life on Mars.
- Mars has the largest volcano in the Solar System, Olympus Mons, which is 17 miles high and 320 miles wide. Olympus Mons is now extinct.
- A day on Mars is 24 hours and 37 minutes long.
- So far, there have been 13 missions on Mars.
- Mars is very rusty.
- The red dust on Mars has lots of iron in it.
- The red dust on Mars causes the sky to be pink.
Jupiter
- Jupiter is the 5th planet from the Sun.
- The temperature on Jupiter is 120 C.
- Jupiter is made completely of gas. Jupiter has 90% hydrogen and 10% hydrogen.
- Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System.
- A day on Jupiter is 9.9 hours.
- Jupiter is the 4th brightest planet.
- If Jupiter was hollow, all the planets would be able to fit inside it.
- The red spot on Jupiter is a storm. The storm has been continuing for about 300 years.
- 2 Earths would be able to fit into Jupiter's red spot.
Saturn
- Saturn is the 6th planet from the Sun.
- Saturn is the 2nd biggest planet in the Solar System.
- Saturn is mostly made of gases.
- Saturn has 7 major rings made of ice.
Neptune
- Neptune is the 8th planet from the Sun.
- Neptune was discovered in 1846. Neptune has an ocean and a volcano.
- The volcano on Neptune spits out ice and water.
- It takes 164.8 years for Neptune to orbit the Sun.
Black Holes
- A black hole is a region of space where the power of gravity is so great that anything that enters it cannot get out.
- the center of black holes are called event horizons. the event horizon is the strongest part of black holes.
- it is possible for black holes to die out.
- A black hole can be as big as the galaxy it is located in.
Asteroids
- Most of the asteroids in space are located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
- Some asteroids orbit each other.
- The biggest asteroid's diameter is 1,000 km.
- the smallest asteroids diameter is 5 meters.
Meteorites
- A meteorite is a bright streak of light.
- Meteorites are also called shooting stars or fireballs.
- In space they are called meteors, and when they reach the Earth, they are called meteorites.
- meteors are made out of big pieces of rocks.
Space is very interesting and I hope to learn much more about it.
